Alderman Flores Introduces Proposal to Establish a Citywide Standard for Green Businesses

As part of ongoing campaign to create meaningful green legislation, Ald. Manny Flores has put forth a proposal to set a "Green Business Standard" for Chicago businesses. The resolution will help give the city a metric by which it can measure businesses' commitment to efficiency and sustainability.

Flores said it's essential for the city to develop a thriving green, sustainable economy.

"It's time that we have serious discussions about what 'green' really means so we can provide businesses with incentives - whether we're talking about grants or tax breaks - and encourage other businesses to adopt environmentally friendly practices," he said.

In a recent article in The Chicago Reader, Flores said the city must takes steps to be competitive in the growing green economy.

"Barack Obama's talked about creating five million new jobs in clean technologies-well, how do we determine whether or not these companies we might be allocating public dollars for are indeed 'clean technologies'?"

Flores has asked that the city bring together a group of business leaders, academics, developers, legal experts and environmental advocates to draft a plan to help the city define "green."

Flores' resolution was approved earlier this month during a joint meeting of the Committee on Finance, Committee on Economic, Capital and Technology Development and Committee on Energy, Environmental Protection and Public Utilities.
