While a Majority of the Cook County Board Repeals Sales Tax Increase, Stroger Veto Upheld by Commissioners, Highest Sales Tax in the Nation Remains

The Cook County Board of Commissioners voted 12-3 on May 5 to repeal the full 1% sales tax increase it passed last February. The reduction, which would roll back the sales tax to 9.25% in the City of Chicago, would take effect on January 1, 2010. However, President Stroger vowed to veto the measure, and he needs only four votes to sustain a veto. An override of the President’s veto requires a 4/5ths majority, or 14 votes. This past week, President Stroger was able to withstand an override of his veto, which means the tax stands for now.

Voting For Override: Daley; Gainer; Gorman; Goslin; Maldonado; Moreno; Murphy; Peraica; Schneider; Silvestri; Suffredin, Collins

Voting Against Repeal: Beavers; Butler; Steele, Sims

C.A.R. supports the efforts of the Chicagoland Chamber on this issue and will monitor and report on any updates or veto action by President Stroger.
